hi! my name is tess wei-ping (維平) and i’m a climate scientist and musician based in NYC.

i’m currently a NASA postdoctoral program fellow at NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. my work aims to better understand the oceanic and atmospheric drivers of climate extremes such as forest fire and drought in a warming world, using data from observations, climate models, and paleoclimate proxies. my research seeks to understand how large-scale climate dynamics, like hemispheric-scale stationary waves or natural interannual-to-decadal variability, drive changes in drought, heat, and forest fire.

i received my PhD in 2025 from the department of earth and environmental sciences at columbia university and the lamont-doherty earth observatory, and my A.B. in 2019 in physics from princeton university.

read more about my research, or get in touch with me about science!

i’m also a freelance violinist and violist, with experience in the studio, playing as a soloist in bands and for events, pit orchestras, and more. get in touch with me about music!
